"Auf Christi Himmelfahrt" (#117)

German text in the Gesangbuch:

1 Auf Christi Himmelfahrt allein

ich meine Nachfahrt gründe

und allen Zweifel, Angst und Pein

hiermit stets überwinde,

denn weil das Haupt im Himmel ist,

wird seine Glieder Jesus Christ

zur rechten Zeit nachholen.

2 Weil er gezogen himmelan

und große Gab empfangen,

mein Herz auch nur im hemmel kann,

sonst nirgend, Ruh erlangen;

denn wo mein Schatz ist kommen hin,

da ist auch stets mein Herz und Sinn,

nach ihm mich stets verlanget.

3 Ach, Herr, laß diese Gnade mich

von deiner Auffahrt spüren,

daß mit dem wahren Glauben ich

mög meine Nachfahrt zieren

und dann einmal, wann dirs gefällt,

mit Freuden scheiden aus der Welt.

Herr, höre doch mein Flehen!

My prose translation:

1 On Christ's ascension alone

Do I base my following,

And all doubt, fear, and torment

[Do I] always overcome with this;

For because the Head is in Heaven,

Jesus Christ will collect His members

At the proper time.

2 Because He has gone Heavenwards

And received great offering,

My heart also can attain peace

Only in Heaven, nowhere else;

For where my treasure is gone,

There also my heart and mind always are,

Always asking me for Him.

3 O Lord, let me feel this mercy

From Your ascension

So that with true faith I

May adorn my following

And then when it pleases You,

Depart the world with joy.

But, Lord, hear my prayer!

Part of the second verse is drawn from Matthew 6:21:  "'For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.'"

I translated "Nachfahrt" in the first and third verses as "following," but I'm not sure that this gives the full sense of the original.

This hymn appears as "On Christ's Ascension I Now Build" in The Lutheran Hymnal (#216), Lutheran Worship (#150), and The Lutheran Service Book (#492).  In all of these, and as the Gesangbuch notes, the text is sung to the tune "Nun freut euch, lieben Chr[isten]."  Here's the TLH arrangement:
