"Nun freut euch, Gottes" (#122)

German text in the Gesangbuch:

1 Nun freut euch, Gottes Kinder all,

der Herr fährt auf mit großem Schall;

lobsinget ihm, lobsinget ihm,

lobsinget ihm mit lauter Stimm.

2 Die Engel und all Himmelsheer

erzeigen Christo göttlich Ehr

und jauchzen ihm mit fröhlchem Schall,

daß thun die lieben Engel all.

3 Daß unser Heiland Jesus Christ,

wahr Gottessohn, Mensch worden ist,

des freuen sich die Engel sehr

und gönnen uns gern solche Ehr.

4 Der Herr hat uns die Stätt bereit,

da wir solln bleibn in Ewigkeit;

lobsinget ihm, lobsinget ihm,

lobsinget ihm mit lauter Stimm.

5 Wir sind Erben im Himmelreich,

wir sind den lieben Engeln gleich,

das sehn die lieben Engel gern

und danken mit uns Gott dem Herrn.

6 Es hat mit uns nun nimmer Noth;

der Satan, Sünd und ewge Tod

allsamt zu Schanden worden sind

durch Gottes und Maria Kind.

7 Den Heilgen Geist sendt er herab,

auf daß er unser Herz erlab

und tröst uns durch das göttlich Wort

und uns behüt fürs Teufels Mord.

8 Also baut er die Christenheit

zur ewgen Freud und Seligkeit;

allein der Glaub an Jesum Christ

die recht Erkenntniß Gottes ist.

9 Der Heilig Geist den Glauben stärkt,

Gedulg und Hoffnung in uns wirkt,

erleucht und macht die Herzen fest

und uns in Trübsal nicht verläßt.

10 Was uns die göttlich Majestät

am heilgen Kreuz erworben hat,

das theilet aus der Heilig Geist,

darum er unser Lehrer heißt.

11 Der Vater hat den Sohn gesandt,

der Sohn wird anders nicht erkannt,

ohn durch den Heilgen Geist allein,

der muß die Herzen machen rein.

12 So manche schöne Gottesgab

bringt uns der Heilge Geist herab

und uns fürm Satan wohl verwahrt;

solchs schafft des Herren Himmelfahrt.

13 So danket nun dem lieben Herrn

und lobet ihn von Herzen gern;

lobsinget mit der Engel Chör,

daß man es in dem Himmel hör.

14 Gott Vater in der Ewigkeit,

es sagt dir deine Christenheit

groß Ehr und Dank mit höchstem Fleiß,

zu allen Zeiten Lob und Preis.

15 Herr Jesu Christe, Gottes Sohn,

gewaltig, herrlich, prächtig, schön,

es dankt dir deine Christenheit

von nun an bis in Ewigkeit.

16 Du Heilger Geist, du wahrer Gott,

der du uns tröst in aller Noth,

wir rühmen dich, wir loben dich

und sagen dir Dank ewiglich.

My prose translation:

1 Now rejoice, all God's children;

The Lord goes up witha great sound;

Praise Him, praise Him,

Praise Him with a loud voice.

2 The angels and all the host of Heaven

Show divine honor to Christ

And exult in Him with a cheerful sound;

All the dear angels do.

3 Our Savior Jesus Christ,

True Son of God, is become man;

Therefore the angels greatly rejoice

And gladly allow us such glory.

4 The Lord has prepared a place for us

Where we should remain in eternity;

Praise Him, praise Him,

Praise Him with a loud voice.

5 We are heirs in the kingdom of Heaven;

We are like the dear angels;

The dear angels see that gladly

And thank God the Lord with us.

6 Now we never have misery;

Satan, sin, and eternal death

Are all together brought to shame

By the Child of God and of Mary.

7 He sends down the Holy Ghost

So that He restores our heart

And comforts us through the divine word

And protects us from the murder of the devil.

8 Thus He builds Christendom

For eternal joy and blessedness;

Only faith in Jesus Christ

Is the true knowledge of God.

9 The Holy Ghost strengthens faith,

Works patience and hop in us,

Enlightens, and makes the heart firm,

And does not leave us in trouble.

10 That which the divine Majesty

Earned for us on the holy cross

Is distributed by the Holy Ghost;

Therefore, He is called our teacher.

11 The Father has sent the Son;

The Son will not recognize otherwise

Without through the Holy Ghost alone,

Who must make the heart pure.

12 So many beautiful gifts of God

Does the Holy Ghost bring down to us

And protects us well from Satan;

Such things does the Ascension of the Lord cause.

13 So now thank the dear Lord

And praise Him gladly from your heart;

Sing praise with the choir of angels

So that one hears it in Heaven.

14 God the Father in eternity,

Your Christendom ascribes to You

Great glory and thanks with highest diligence,

At all times praise and exultation.

15 Lord Jesus Christ, God's Son,

Powerful, wonderful, magnificent, beautiful,

Your Christendom thanks You

From now on until eternity.

16 You Holy Ghost, You true God,

You Who comforts us in all distress,

We extol You; we praise You

And give You thanks eternally.

The first line of the fourth verse ("Der Herr hat uns die Stätt bereit" "The Lord has prepared a place for us") references John 14:2:  "In meines Vaters Hause sind viele Wohnungen.  Wenn's nicht so wäre, hätte ich dann zu euch gesagt:  Ich gehe hin, euch die Stätte zu bereiten?" "'In my Father's house are many rooms.  If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?'"

I switched the tenth verse from active voice to passive voice.

I'm not very confident in my translation of the second and third lines of the eleventh verse.

I translated "schafft" in the twelfth verse as "causes" (or, really, "does... cause") but I'm not sure this is the best translation.

I felt I needed a less prosaic translation of "sagt" in the fourtheenth verse than just "says" ("Your Christendom says to You / Great glory and thanks..."), so I used "ascribe," taking after Psalm 96:7-8:  "7 Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength!  8 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts!"

As far as I can tell, this hymn isn't in The Lutheran Hymnal, Lutheran Worship, or The Lutheran Service Book.  According to the Gesangbuch, the text is sung to the tune "Herr Gott, dich loben alle."
