"Ach, wie groß ist deine" (#232)

German text in the Gesangbuch:

1 Ach, wie groß ist deine Gnade,

du getreues Vaterherz,

daß dich unsre Noth und Schmerz,

daß dich aller Menschen Schade

hat erbarmet väterlich,

uns zu helfen ewiglich.

2 Du hast uns so hoch geliebet,

daß der Mensch soll aller Pein

frei und ewig selig sein;

daß dein Sohn sich selbst hingibet

und beruft uns allzumal

zu dem großen Abendmahl.

3 Ja, dein werther Geist bezeuget

durch die Tauf und Abendmahl

unser Heil im Himmelssal,

der die Herzen zu dir neiget,

weil er uns den Glauben schenkt,

daß uns Höll und Tod nicht kränkt.

4 Weil die Wahrheit nicht kann lügen,

will ich dir vertrauen fest,

weil du keinen nicht verläßst;

weil dein Wort nicht kann betrügen,

bleibt mir meine Seligkeit

unverrückt in Ewigkeit.

5 Lob sei dir für deine Gnade,

My prose translation:

1 Oh, how great is Your mercy,

You faithful Father-heart

That You on our distress and pain,

That You on the harm of all men

Have had fatherly mercy,

To help us eternally.

2 You have so highly loved us

That man should be free of all pain

And eternally blessed

That Your Son sacrificed Himself

And calls us altogether

To the great evening meal.

3 Yes, Your worthy Spirit testifies

By baptism and the evening meal

To our salvation in the hall of heaven,

Where hearts bow to You

Because He gives us faith

So that hell and death do not hurt us.

4 Because the truth cannot lie,

I will firmly trust You

Because You do not leave anyone;

Because Your word cannot deceive,

My blessed remains for me

Unshaken into eternity.

5 Praise be to You for Your mercy,

You faithful Father-heart

That You [have had mercy on] my distress and pain,

That You also on the harm to my soul
